Dr. Afsoon Gerayli knows that for many people, dental visits cause emotional trauma. Since she is a top dentist in the area, Dr. Gerayli strives to keep people comfortable when she is working on their teeth even if it requires sedation.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation, or sleep, dentistry involves the use of medication during dental treatments. Because many people struggle when a dentist is working in their mouths, medication is administered to help them relax. In most cases, patients remain awake during sedation dentistry unless they need to be under general anesthesia to undergo a procedure. The four levels of sedation dentistry are:

  • Marginal
  • Moderate
  • Deep
  • Complete unconsciousness

During marginal sedation, you’ll be awake, but you will feel relaxed. If you need moderate sedation, then you’ll also be awake. However, you may not be aware that the procedure is taking place. For deep sedation, patients are asleep, but your sleep dentist will still be able to wake you up. When you need to be unconscious during a procedure, you’ll be under general anesthesia.

Different Types of Sedation Dentistry

At Victory Cosmetic Dentistry, you will have the option of being sedated by our board certified anesthesiologist, while Dr. Gerayli performs dental procedures. When it comes to sedation dentistry in Reseda and Tarzana, four main types are available. They include:

  • Minimal sedation with nitrous oxide
  • Oral sedation
  • Moderate sedation through an IV
  • Deep sleep or general anesthesia

Minimal Sedation

If you’re a little uncomfortable during dental procedures, then you can choose to breathe in nitrous oxide before and during your treatment. This substance is commonly referred to as laughing gas because of the relaxed and pleasant feeling that most people experience while breathing it. To administer it, your Valley dentist will place a mask over your nose. The mask will deliver a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen that you’ll breathe into your body. During the dental procedure, your dentist will have control over the amount of gas that you receive. Many people prefer this form of sedation because it wears off quickly.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation can be marginal or moderate. This is based on the dose. If you handle dental treatments better under marginal sedation, your dentist may prescribe Halcion, which is similar to Valium. You’ll need to take the pill about an hour before your appointment. You will likely experience drowsiness. For moderate sedation using oral substances, you may receive a larger dose.

IV Sedation

With IV sedation, you’ll be given a sedative through a vein in your arm. It works quickly, and it allows your dentist to manage the dosage during the dental treatment. Many people choose IV sedation when they are having their wisdom teeth removed, but sleep dentists also use this form of sedation for regular treatments.

Deep Sleep

If you must be completely unaware that you’re having dental work done, you’ll need to be deeply sedated or put under general anesthesia. For deep sedation, you’ll receive medications that may make you just about or completely unconscious. With this type of sedation, it will take time for you to wake up. When you choose general anesthesia, you will be unconscious. For you to wake up, the medication will need to wear off. With both options, you’ll feel groggy and sleepy following the treatment.

Who Should Request Sleep Dentistry?

People who avoid going to the dentist because of intense anxiety or outright fear should consider sedation dentistry. It is also recommended for those who:

  • Are unable to remain still while seated in the dentist’s chair
  • Experience a diminished pain threshold
  • Suffer from a touchy gag reflex
  • Need an excessive amount of dental work done at one time
  • Have extremely sensitive teeth

Is it Safe?

It is possible to relieve your dental work fears with sedation dentistry in Reseda and Tarzana. Keep in mind that with anesthesia, there is always a risk. However, for most people, sleep dentistry is safe. For those who are obese or suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, an additional chat with their medical doctor or dentist is recommended. The reason for this is that researchers have discovered that these people are at a higher risk of developing complications when they are under an anesthetic.
